After the death of his father, Rajveer Singh (Amitabh Bachchan) returns to India in search of his mother after being told she is in the country. But when he finds out that she has passed away two years earlier, he decides to fulfill her longtime wish for him to see his childhood home in Meerut. Because of this, once back in Meerut he meets Sara Kapoor (Akshaye Khanna), whom he later falls in love with. Sara likes Rajveer but thinks that there are better men for her than him. She also falls in love with Avinash Dhawan (Amrita Rao). Rajveer is unaware of Avinash's feelings for Sara. He keeps following her because he wants to tell her how much he loves her, but chickens out every time. When Avinash proposes to Sara, she accepts partly because of Rajveer's inability to declare his love to her. After Avinash and Sara are married, it is revealed that he is psychotic and very possessive towards Sara, not allowing any man to come near her. His insecurity comes from the fact that his father married a much younger woman after divorcing his mother when he was in college in London. Then one day, Rajveer comes across a drunk Avinash kissing the neck of another woman named Seema (Bipasha Basu). Seema is Avinash's colleague, who is in love with him. It is revealed that Avinash has an alcohol problem. He lied to Seema that he was divorced, but then says that he is married himself. Rajveer tries to teach him a lesson about lying to women and also Seema about the truth. Then, Rajveer tells him how much he loves Sara and apologises on her behalf, as she had asked him to earlier if he would be able to do it if she were in his place; seeing this act of love Avinash finally decides to stop drinking and starts loving Sara again.
